Rapid
Prototyping
The
machine works by extruding ABS plastic layer by layer to build up
a 3D model. The model build material is supplied from a cassette
in continuous filament form.
The
machine feeds the model material and support material from their
respective cassettes to the head which melts the material in a controlled
manner. The head traverses in the 'X' and 'Y' axes extruding material
onto a support platform thus re-creating the 3D CAD model in cross
section. The ABS solidifies and the platform lowers ('Z' axis) where
upon the next layer is added. The process continues until the 3D
model is complete.
Overhanging
areas requiring support are braced with support material laid up
in a honeycomb manner. These supporting areas are broken away when
the model is complete.
Rota
Design has invested in the facility primarily to prove designs prior
to manufacture. This provides all parties concerned with an enhanced
degree of confidence that the design is fit for purpose and assists
prevention of costly design errors.
The
main advantages are:
Proof of Concept - Everyone concerned with the
design process is able to touch and evaluate the design and function
quickly and in a cost effective manner.
Functional Testing - Test form, fit and function
with as many design iterations as are necessary using functional
ABS components.
Cost Reduction - identifying design flaws early
in the design process saves time and money.
Confidentiality - generate functional models manufactured
in-house at Rota Design thus protecting your products, designs and
IPR.
Vacuum Forming - ABS components are widely used
as masters for vacuum forming applications.
Marketing Tool - Models made to scale or full size
are excellent marketing tools. Impress your client with a functional
ABS model.
Product Prototypes - Prototypes or finished models
allow you to see your product and catch design flaws before going
into production.
Post
Finishing - ABS components may be post processed by filling
and painting using automotive finishes or imagine your product chromium
plated.
ABS may be drilled and tapped. We can also make larger components
and assemblies by gluing the parts together!
